5 TECHNICAL QUESTIONS TO ASK A SALESPERSON BEFORE BUYING A DOOR
Choosing an entrance door often comes down to appearance and price. However, there are five technical questions that will tell you more about the quality of the structure than any product catalog.
Why Ask Technical Questions
A door salesperson will always talk about the benefits. The buyer's task is to ask questions that are difficult to answer with vague clichés. A specific answer indicates a manufacturer who genuinely knows their product. An evasive or blurry answer is a reason to think twice.
The five questions below concern parameters that directly affect security, durability, and comfort. You do not need a technical background to understand the answers.
Question 1: What is the security class of the locks, and how is the lock zone protected?
When choosing a door, you should evaluate not just the strength of the steel, but its ability to resist a burglar's tools. The lock zone is the most vulnerable area, so the key question concerns the locks themselves and their physical protection. Reliable manufacturers use mechanisms certified according to European standards (EN 12209), where Class 4 represents the highest level of lock security.
The salesperson must clearly name the lock brands and confirm their class with a certificate, rather than limiting themselves to phrases like "we have good locks installed here." Also, ask if the lock is physically protected by armor plates (escutcheons) that prevent drilling or snapping the cylinder.
The ABWEHR Way: Our doors are equipped with original locks from global leaders—Italian brands Mottura and Securemme, as well as Turkish brand Kale. The lock zone is additionally protected by mortise armor plates and manganese plates, making quick forced entry virtually impossible. CE and ISO 9001-2015 certificates for our door units are publicly available.
Question 2: What is the exterior coating, and how is it applied?
The coating of an outdoor door is one of the first parameters to degrade if chosen incorrectly. Regular paint under direct sunlight and rain can start cracking and fading within just 3–5 years. The question is simple: is it a standard paint job or film lamination on a galvanized base?
A high-quality coating for outdoor doors is a weather-resistant film applied to galvanized steel with powerful UV stabilizers. It is highly resistant to ultraviolet rays, moisture, and temperature fluctuations.
The ABWEHR Way: In our premium Bionica and Termix segments, we use the Italian Lampre coating. The PVC film is applied to a sheet of galvanized metal using an industrial high-temperature and high-pressure method before the door components are even shaped. The result is a uniform protective layer with no weak spots at the corners and bends, where paint typically begins to peel first. The Lampre coating comes with a 7-year warranty against fading.
Question 3: How many sealing contours are there, and what material are they made of?
The sealing contours between the door leaf and the frame keep your home warm, provide soundproofing, and seal out odors and drafts. One contour is an outdated minimum. Two or three contours are the standard for a high-quality modern door.
The material matters even more than the quantity. A high-quality thermal weatherstrip retains its elasticity in any weather: it doesn't harden in winter frosts or become sticky in summer heat. Cheap, porous alternatives lose their shape within 2–3 seasons.
The ABWEHR Way: Depending on the segment, our doors are equipped with 2 or 3 contours of premium thermal weatherstripping. They guarantee a tight fit of the door leaf to the frame throughout the entire life cycle of the product.
Question 4: Is there an eccentric for adjusting the door fit?
An eccentric is a mechanism that allows you to adjust how tightly the door fits against the frame after installation. Over time, any house undergoes minor settling, and seasonal temperature swings slightly alter the geometry of building materials. Without an eccentric, the only solution to a draft is to call a technician or live with the gap.
The presence of an adjustable eccentric is the hallmark of a door engineered for long-term, comfortable operation. The question is straightforward: "Can I adjust the door fit myself if needed?" If the answer is yes, ask the salesperson to show you this component.
The ABWEHR Way: An adjustable eccentric is a standard structural element in our doors. In just a few minutes, you can easily tweak it yourself to increase or decrease the door leaf pressure—for instance, switching the door between winter and summer modes.
Question 5: What is the warranty, and what exactly does it cover?
A warranty is a real financial obligation. It is important to understand not just the number of years, but the terms. Most importantly: is the warranty provided by the manufacturing plant or by a local dealer? If it is from a dealer, what happens if that specific retail store closes?
A direct manufacturer with its own factory provides a warranty backed by a real production base, ISO 9001-2015 quality certificates, and European CE certificates of conformity that accompany every single batch.
The ABWEHR Way: ABWEHR is a full-cycle manufacturing plant located in Chernihiv. We offer a 5-year warranty on the structure, a 7-year warranty on the Lampre coating, up to a 10-year warranty on Kale, Securemme, and Mottura hardware, a 1-year warranty on MDF panels with Vinorit film, and a 12-month warranty on Cordon 3B4-CR locks. A specific condition for outdoor doors: the presence of a protective canopy with a depth of at least 1.5 meters is a mandatory requirement for the coating warranty to remain valid.
Conclusion
Asking these five questions in a showroom will take no more than ten minutes. However, the answers will provide much more practical information than a one-hour presentation with glossy catalogs. A reliable manufacturer always answers specifically, providing exact numbers and hardware brands. Anything less is a sign to keep looking
